If the many incarnations of Guitar Hero weren’t enough, budding (air) guitarists can now happily shred away whilst actually holding something other than boring old space.
Toy makers, Tomy have released a new product called Guitar RockStar just in time for the Christmas shopping rush. This toy, designed to plug into headphones or speakers with its input and output jacks, can be played by strumming, or as Tomy like to say, thrashing(!) infrared lasers. Yes, I know.
Either way, it sounds incredibly cool, if not corny. It’s pretty small, as it’s just the head and part of the guitar neck. This will definitely make for an awesome party trick.
Martyn Ayres, a spokesperson for Tomy says, “All they have to do is turn on Guitar Rock Star, grab the electronic guitar neck, finger the frets and strum the infra-red strings to play.” Sounds pretty cool, definitely beats the Power Ranger knock-offs we got under the Christmas tree.
The toy, Guitar RockStar is aimed at anyone from eight to 80, boy or girl. Tomy have made sure you can get passed any Air Guitarist’s arsenal of windmill strumming and finger tapping wildly.
The Guitar RockStar measures in at 250 x 210 x 70mm and has a multitude of buttons to get the music flowing. It not only has the free play option (which I’d probably never get tired of) but also comes loaded with eight different tracks to play along to. From ballsy rock ‘n roll classics like ‘Wild Things’ by The Troggs, over-the-top rockers The Darkness’ track ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ to Indie heavyweights Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Take Me Out’.
Unlike Guitar Hero, there is no winning aspect to Guitar RockStar. It’s purely jamming away for the fun of it. The only way to actually ‘win’ would be to outdo anyone else’s air guitar moves. A nifty feature of Guitar RockStar is that Tomy have included a full range of notes from A to G with flats, sharps and sevenths all there for your endless amusement.
Guitar RockStar goes for about £15 (roughly $30) so it’s not exactly going to cost an arm and a leg to make the kids (or yourself) happy over the holidays. It comes in three colors, red, blue and a sleek black, so remember to dress accordingly if you really want to look like a pro. Please remember, leather pants only to be worn if absolutely necessary.
